FSC® Policy
Being FSC registered we buy from responsibly managed forests. Situated in between two national parks; the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales, we source most of our softwood sawlogs within a 60 mile radius. Our Chain of Custody certification means the sawlogs are tracked from the forest to our yard and then on to our customers. We work hard to ensure every link between the forest and the consumer is certified.
Our FSC label guarantees that the trees that are harvested are replaced or allowed to regenerate naturally. This gives our current and potentially new customers the assurance that future generations will be able to enjoy the benefits of the forest and that they are managed with consideration for people, wildlife and the environment. The Future Is Wood
The area of woodland in the UK at 31 March 2011 is 3.08 million hectares. As these trees grow they absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and lock it away for decades, even centuries which helps reduce climate change. When timber is sawn and used for products such as fencing, pallet and construction, that carbon is ‘locked in’ for further years. When these products come to the end of their working lives then they can be burned to provide heat for homes. In terms of production, wood’s competitors in the construction industry; steel, concrete, plastics – are far less energy efficient and much more polluting.
However, England has only 10% forest cover, one of the lowest in Europe. To help our climate we need to use more wood and to get planting more tree’s, quick growing one’s in particular!.
